Until yesterday, Republic Day parade was either read in text books in schools or watched on National television.
The opportunity to be at Janpat and watch the President of India hoist the National flag came as a pleasant surprise, thanks to a friend. The irony was a group of non-Indians accompanied to the venue. Not many Indians whom I approached, were keen to witness the prestigious moment.
For a change, the Indian Standard Time was given a pass and the parade began at 9am and continued for 3 hours.
Cadets from different states marched to the podium where along with the President Pratiba Patil were Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and French President Nicolas Sarkozy. This was followed by Vans that represented the states cultures.
Men on bikes balancing at their best was followed with fighter plans soaring high in the air. The event was marked with flying of tri-colour baloons in the air carrying mini-flags.
