Community Radio in Mumbai

Mumbai University will soon set up a community radio. Clearance from the Union Information and Broadcasting Ministry has already come through and the University is in the process of getting a frequency allocation. At present there are 28 community radio stations in India, with Tamil Nadu’s Anna University being the first one to start broadcasting a few years ago. Tamil Nadu has 11 community radios in operation, followed by Delhi and UP with 4 each, Karnataka, AP and Rajasthan with 2 each and Kerala with 1 are some of the other states in which some cities have community radio broadcasts. The Chandigarh Administration has adopted a scheme started by the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting under which NGOs and institutes like ICAR, Krishi Vigyan Kendras, state agriculture universities and autonomous bodies would be given permission to run a community radio. The administration has invited applications to seek permission for the same. While a Guru Nanak Girls College in Model Town has become the first educational institute in Punjab to have an FM radio station of its own. The radio station is christened ‘Guru Nanak Girls College FM Radio Station’, will be on air from July 1. Initially, the broadcast will be from 6 am to 10.30 pm.
