Man with the Moon Walk: Michael Jackson

8869426888695171886960908869634688696291

Beat it, All I wana say that, Black or White and many more songs of Michael Jackson were introduced to Indians via MTV. All I can remember is his pop songs and him grooving to those tracks.

His visit to India was hysterical. Although, I was too young to remember much. News about a girl not having bath after being touched by Michael Jackson was everywhere. Whereas, Prabhu Deva claimed he could match up to Michael Jackson’s dance. But no one, could ever sing and simultaneously dance throughout a concert then.

Like any fan of his dance, I too tried to do moon dance at home by throwing some talcom powder on the floor. Everytime missing by an inch.

It bothered me, when negative news were spread across the media. Though, we will all remember Michael Jackson for his unforgetable songs.

Rahul v/s Priyanka

Congress won the 2009 election with an unexpected 206 seats thereby giving much needed stability to India. Manmohan Singh took over as the Prime Minister of  India while we saw Sonia Gandhi smiling like never before. A lot has been said about Rahul Gandhi’s contribution to the party. 28 years old woman is sworn as minister. Then, there is influx of youngistan in Congress party supposedly an initiative by Rahul Gandhi.

So suddenly , Congress party is going through a transformation from being the party of the oldies to youngistan.

In another 5 years, we could expect Rahul Gandhi contesting for Prime Minister’s post. But is he the only contender for the post? Could Priyanka Gandhi be competing for the same post?

While Rahul Gandhi is an impression of Ragiv Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi is an impression of Indira Gandhi. Apart from physical resemblence, do they also posses traits of them?

I was born the same year when Indira Gandhi was assassinated and do not remember much about Ragiv Gandhi’s tenure either. So comparing their qualities with their children or grand children would be futile.

Still why is it that Priyanka Gandhi looks more apt for Prime Minister ship than Rahul Gandhi? Is it their body language?

Rahul seems introvert while Priyanka on the other hand comes as an extrovert person. Rahul is seen mostly in traditonal political attire while Priyanka on many occassions is seen in western clothes apart from the usual traditonal politcal attire meant for women. She personifies today’s woman and speaks her mind. This was evident when she refuted, “Do I look old to you?” to Modi’s statement on Congress being a 120 years old lady. On the otherside, Rahul Gandhi appears like someone who is following Congress party’s code of conduct and trying always to be politically correct. Rahul seems like learning the tricks of the game while Priyanka seems to know it all. All this could be deceiving and my mere perception. But what is certain is that one of the two is definitely going to lead India in the coming days.

What’s it like being an A.D for a film?

Source: Facebook.

http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/group.php?gid=38639841923

  • Just because you understand scripts and dialogues or performances doesn’t qualify you to be an A.D. 1st A.D – The person in charge of scheduling a film. He/She decides how many shoot days are required to finish a film and must finish it in that much time. He/She is also responsible for running/managing a set. This post is highly specialized and the person MUST understand scheduling and SHOULD HAVE managed a proper film set before. Generally, it takes about 3-5 years of GOOD EXPERIENCE as a 3rd and then as a 2nd before you can be one.
  • 2nd A.D – He is 1st A.D’s right hand man. Does day to day correspondence with the production department and is the main link between Direction and Production. Responsibilities include – Making Call Sheets, Daily Progress Reports, Background Action as per the director and the first a.d. THIS MAY SOUND EASY BUT AGAIN this too needs previous experience of at leats 2 films or a lot of commercials(sometimes).
  • 2nd 2nd A.D – Person incharge of Hair/Make-up/Wardrobe. It takes endless co-ordination between the three departments and the actors. The person must have the confidence to deal with actors and stars. MUST NOT BE STARSTRUCK. One GOOD film experience minimum or a lot of good commercials.
  • 3rd A.D – The person who helps the second a.d set the Background Action and follows other instructions by the same. Also distributes sides(scens, dialogues) to the crew and the day to day xerox and printing work. Mostly this is where new comers start but if it is a big movie then they prefer to go with someone experienced.
  • SET P.A – These are also known as “Runners” in hollywood. As the name suggests they are suppose to do everything their seniors tell them to do. Counting Background Actors, Distributing Paperwork, Locking up the locations (ie. controlling traffic) etc. etc.
  • OTHER POSITIONS- Clapper – person in charge of the slate. Continuity Supervisor – A very important position. The person keeps a check on various continuity issues. Wardrobe,Action,Props etc etc.. Very Very Demanding job. Minimum 2-3 film experience As you can see none of the above are creative jobs but having said that it all depends from film to film. Most of the new production houses work in the above fashion but some old ones have their own system and I am not the best person to explain that.

Where does one draw the line between journalism and public relation?

PublicRelations

This dates some 5 years back, I was freelancing then for a youth mag. I was a curious little girl who was simultaneously learning about media and journalism to be specific. I remember calling up the editor of the mag and suggesting a story idea. The idea was to go to different designers and check out their collections? How it suited the young generation etc? I had emailed the idea to the editor and followed with a phone call to check if it sounded good enough of carry. Instead, I remember she snapping at me saying, that she is not interested in PR stories.

I was startled. ‘PR’ the word was an alien to me. I did hear about this profession but was unaware about the job per se. So, I was hurt when she snapped at me and rejected my idea.

It was only after a few months when PR was taught as a subject in my class, that I learnt why she refused to accept my idea. But it’s not like the mag never carried any PR articles. Though, I am glad she snapped at me then, because in years that followed I was very careful what stories I suggested to the editor.

Whether you are a freelancer or an employee of a newspaper or any other media, threat from doing a PR story is very much prevalent.

A press release must only be the peg of the story not the story. What a journalist needs to do is find what is the press release talking about? That sets the agenda and a journalist can then look for a story angle which has to be different from the press release. The article then must answer the 5W’s H.

This is an art which a journalist needs to have and only then can he/she be called a journalist. Otherwise there would be no difference in the two professions. Obviously, here is where the talent of the journalist is put to test.

Some cautions, do not be friendly with PRs. Be Professional. Avoid any gifts from them. It’s tricky to have yourself in their good books and still maintain dignity to your profession. After all they are excellent source of information, you cannot ignore.

The World is Flat : Thomas Friedman

book_1_1

The World is flat according to three times winner of Pulitzer prize Thomas Friedman. The theory came into existence when he visited India where he was witnessed to Indians with American names and accent communicating to Americans miles away. What he means is level playing field that we have today. Wherein third world countries have access to resources which first world country like America does and hence the opportunity to compete with each on the same field. This was not thinkable a decade ago. Hence the world is flat today and not round. He justifies his theory beautifully.

Apart from outsourcing and India, the book deals with various issues thereby making it a good read. A must read if one avoids the outsourcing chapters. Never the less it’s nice to know from an American’s perspective.

America and Free Trade

According to Friedman, the Indians and Chinese are not racing them to the bottom. We are racing Americans to the top. We want high standard of living. We want brand names and not junk etc. The more we spend, the more diverse product markets are created and the more niches for specialization are created in America.

He further adds that American companies are sending their knowledge work to India. Indians are using their earnings and insights to produce new low cost products which the poorer Indians can use to lift themselves from poverty to middle class where they can purchase American products.

Both China and India are developing from their focus on low cost production to low cost innovations of their own. For example Nano Car.

The worry that recession may cut down on many jobs that are being offered to Indians at present, is also addressed. Friedman says that the way to succeed for America is not by stopping railroad line from connecting us but by firing imagination, upgrading skills and adopting those practices, rules, policies and educational institutions that will enable America to claim healthy slice of the bigger and more complex pie.

The Untouchables: Finding the New Middle

In Globalization 1.0 countries had to think globally to thrive, or at least survive. In Globalization 2.0 companies had to think globally to thrive, or at least survive. In Globalization 3.0 individuals have to think globally to thrive, or atleast survive. In a flat world , there is no American jobs. There is just jobs and will go to the best, smartest, most productive or cheapest worker wherever he or she resides. In a flat world, the key to thriving as an individual is figuring out how to make yourself untouchable.

Friedman defines, untouchables are people whose jobs cannot be outsourced, digitized or automated.

How Companies can cope in a flat world?

1. When the world is flat whatever can be done will be done. The only question is whether it will be done by you or to you. So if you have an idea pursue it.Because someone else will have a similar idea and will pursue it faster than you .

2. The Competition is between you and your imagination. When individuals can upload and globalize their ideas, products or services as individuals, then what they imagine matters more than ever.

3. And the big shall act small. One way that big companies learn to flourish in the flat world is how to act small by enabling their customers to act really big.For example Starbucks allowed its customers to customize their drinks to their specifications.

The Rise of Al Qaeda in a Flat World

Thanks to internet and satellite TV , Al Qaeda has been able to build up its Muslim identity and solidarity. Muslims of one country can sympathize with other country. There has proliferation of informal mutual supply chains throughout the Arab Muslim world today. Small networks, of people who move money, through hawalas, who recruit through alternative education system like madrassas, and who communicate through the internet and other tools of the global information revolution. Through internet they can broadcast themselves to your computer. Internet has helped them secure publicity and raise funds.
